Local Scholarships Available

These local scholarships and awards are available through the Zonta Club of Jamestown and the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation:

Mary Bargar Scholarship $1,000*

When she first learned about the Zonta organization, Mary Bargar gathered together a group of professional women to establish the Zonta Club of Jamestown which was chartered on November 17, 1921.  She served as the club’s first co-President during 1921-1922 and also served as President during 1929-30.  Mary continued to serve in various capacities during her years with Zonta.  Mary was educated as a teacher; however, her last professional position was as the Jamestown City Clerk.  Upon her death, a scholarship was established at Jamestown Community College for a woman who was attending college to become an educator. The requirements for this scholarship have changed over the years, but the intent of supporting professional women remains the same.

Today, the Zonta Club of Jamestown proudly sponsors the Mary Bargar Scholarship, which is a financial award of $1,000 based upon merit, to a female high school senior who intends to continue her education and enter the professions.  Applicants must reside in a Zonta Club of Jamestown member’s school district. This currently includes Chautauqua County and Randolph.

Anne H. Crowe Scholarship $1,000*

Anne H. Crowe served as President of the Zonta Club of Jamestown in 1947-48 and again in 1954-55.  She served as District 4 Governor as well as on several Zonta International committees.  She was instrumental in the formation of the Zonta Club of Athens, Greece.  Her work in the financial world offered her a position as a banker as well as a department store executive.

Today, the Zonta Club of Jamestown proudly sponsors the Anne H. Crowe Scholarship through the Chautauqua Regional Community Foundation.  It is a financial award of $1,000, based upon academic achievement and financial need, to a female with a high school diploma or G.E.D. who is furthering her education to improve her career opportunities after an absence from school. Applicants must reside in one of the following school districts:  Maple Grove, Cassadaga Valley, Jamestown, Falconer, Southwestern, Panama, Chautauqua Lake, Frewsburg, Fredonia, or Randolph.

Young Women in Public Affairs Award

This is an award to encourage young women to pursue careers or seek leadership positions in public policy making, government, and volunteer organizations and further their education with these aims in mind. The financial award is $1,000. It is an award for pre-college students, ages 16-19 who have met the following criteria:

  • Lives in the Zonta Club of Jamestown service area
  • Active commitment to volunteerism
  • Experience in local or student government
  • Volunteer leadership achievements
  • Advocate to the mission of advancing the status of women

***Winner of this award will be forwarded to District 4, where all club winners of the YMPA award will be reviewed. One applicant will be selected as the District 4 YMPA winner.  This winner will receive an additional $1,000 award. View Zonta International’s website for additional information.

Nell Newton Scholarship $1,000*

Nell Newton was a Charter member of the Zonta Club of Jamestown which started November 17, 1921.  During her years in Zonta, Nell held a variety of offices including President of the club in 1922-23 and assisted in the formation of four new area Zonta clubs. Upon her death, a scholarship was established at Jamestown Business College for a woman who was preparing for a career in business.  The requirements for this scholarship have changed over the years, but the intent of supporting professional women remains the same.

Today, the Zonta Club of Jamestown proudly sponsors the Nell Newton Scholarship, which is a financial award of $1,000 based upon merit, to a female furthering her education with the intention of making business her profession. Applicants must reside in a Zonta Club of Jamestown member’s school district. This currently includes Chautauqua County and Randolph.

APPLICATION SUBMISSION DEADLINE: MARCH 15th, 2024

Verna Nelson Scholarship $1,000*

Verna Nelson was a Zonta Club member for 59 years, serving as President during the years of 1948-50.  Although she was a nurse by profession, it was her outstanding floral design work that provided her recognition in the Jamestown community.  She was active in fund-raising and beautifying the community with plantings of flowers, plants, and trees.

Today, the Zonta Club of Jamestown proudly sponsors the Verna Nelson Scholarship through the Chautauqua Regional Community Foundation.  It is a financial award of $1,000, based upon academic achievement and involvement in extracurricular activities.  The female applicant must be entering her third or fourth year of undergraduate college or graduate school. Applicants must reside in one of the following school districts:  Maple Grove, Cassadaga Valley, Jamestown, Falconer, Southwestern, Panama, Chautauqua Lake, Frewsburg, Fredonia, or Randolph.

Mary Lou Costanzo Zonta Scholarship Fund

To assist female student(s) who have obtained a vocational certification, associate or bachelor’s degree and is furthering her education after an absence of a year or more from school.  Student must also demonstrate financial need.

 

Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarships

The Jane M. Klausman Scholarships work to support women who demonstrate outstanding potential in business-related fields, and are completing their second or third year of a business-related undergraduate degree program.

The Amelia Earhart Fellowship Program

The Amelia Earhart Fellowship Program is designed to support a woman pursing a Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences and engineering.
