Stella RimingtonStella Rimington

Former director general, MI-5

10:45am in the Ampitheater

Dame Stella Rimington is the retired director general of the British Security Service (MI5). Appointed director general in 1992, she was the first woman to hold the post and the first director general to be publicly named on appointment. Rimington was made a Dame Commander of the Bath in the 1996 New Year Honours List. She is also the author of an autobiography, Open Secret; and the spy novels Rip Tide; At Risk; Secret Asset; Illegal Action; Dead Line; Present Danger; The Geneva Trap; and Close Call.

Rimington joined MI5 as a full-time employee in 1969. She worked in all the main fields of the service’s responsibilities — counter subversion, counter espionage and counter terrorism — becoming successively director of all three branches. During her tenure as director general, Rimington pursued a policy of greater openness for MI5, giving the 1994 Dimbleby Lecture on BBC TV. She retired in April 1996.

Among Rimington’s recent appointments, she has been chairman of the Institute of Cancer Research and a trustee of the Royal Marsden Hospital, the Royal Air Force Museum and the charity Refuge. She has also served as non-executive director of Marks & Spencer and of BG Group, and is involved in the United Kingdom’s Archives Task Force. She earned a postgraduate diploma in the study of records and the administration of archives at Liverpool University.

4Freshmen

Singing with a harmony uniquely their own, The Four Freshmen have enamored listeners world-wide for 65 years, while gaining recognition as one of the most influential vocal groups of all time. Their tight-knit sound inspired The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, The Mamas & The Papas, Frankie Valli and the Manhattan Transfer. The Freshmen have recorded over 75 albums, 70 top selling singles, and received six Grammy Nominations. As the faces changed through the years, the integrity of the sound has been meticulously maintained. Die-hard fans and former members alike have agreed that the current lineup — Bob Ferreira, Tommy Boynton, Stein Malvey and Jon Gaines — are second to none.
